The alarming rise in childhood obesity prompted the Big Sur International Marathon to accept the challenge of creating a youth fitness program designed to promote physical exercise, healthy lifestyle choices and good citizenship. Recognized for its quality and positive impact, JUST RUN was awarded a Gold Medal from the California Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

During the past three decades, the incidence of childhood obesity has doubled in children aged 2-5 and more than tripled in children aged 6-11. School districts are operating on reduced funding and many physical education programs have been eliminated entirely. The free, web-site based JUST RUN program offers a solution for schools and youth programs to easily implement.

The Big Sur Marathon is passionate about the JUST RUN program and committed to its expansion and the inclusion of as many children as possible.
