Leader/Teacher Quick Start Guide

We are glad you are starting a vital program to promote youth fitness. Here is how to get started:

Keep in mind the goals of the JUST RUN program – We are providing an opportunity for children to learn about running and physical activity in a fun environment. We want each child to understand the important link between being active, eating properly, and leading an active and healthy lifestyle to their lifetime health. It is their choice.

If you have any questions about the program please call Mike Dove at 831-484-2309 or Susan Love at 831-625-6226. E-mails are mnjdove@aol.com and susanwlove@sbcglobal.net

Getting Started: Using www.justrun.org
1. Go to the Download Forms section of the website and download the Volunteer Form. Fill it out and fax it to the Big Sur Marathon office at 831-625-2119. We will set up an account for you in the on-line “Just Run across the USA” program and will provide you with a password and enter your group(s) name.

We suggest your youth running group for “Just Run across the USA” have no more than 40 children. If there are too many their accumulated mileage may get them across the USA and back too quickly. If you have more than 40 then separate them into groups based on year in school/grade level or whatever grouping you want. Please indicate how many groups on your fax to the Marathon office.

2. When you have your password go to the website.
- Go into the Change School/Group info to insure that everything is entered correctly. You will use this page to add/change children, add deeds earned, special deeds, and mileage for each child in the program.

HOW TO ADD CHILDREN TO YOUR GROUP

A. GO TO www.justrun.org
B. ON THE LEFT SIDE CLICK ON "JUST RUN ACROSS THE USA." C. IN THE BLUE BOX SEARCH FOR YOUR SCHOOL OR GROUP AND ENTER YOUR PASSWORD.
D. CLICK ON ADD/CHANGE CHILDREN ON THE ADMINISTRATORS PAGE.
E. IN THE UPPER RIGHT IT WILL SAY "ADD CHILD, "CLICK ON THAT.
F. YOU WILL SEE THE SCREEN FOR ADDING CHILDREN.
G. PUT IN THE FIRST AND LAST NAME AND NICKNAME (NICKNAME IS USUALLY THE FIRST NAME OF THE CHILD). IT WILL BE THEIR PASSWORD AS WELL. NOTE THAT IF TWO KIDS HAVE THE SAME FIRST NAME IN THE GROUP, ENTER SOMETHING DIFFERENT FOR THE SECOND CHILD, LIKE MARY AND MARY2.
H. YOU DO NOT NEED THE PARENTS' NAMES BUT YOU NEED TO FILL IN THE BOXES WITH MR. AND MRS.
I. HIT ADD FOR THE FIRST CHILD YOU ENTER AND THEN CONTINUE WITH THE NEXT CHILD. THIS DOES NOT TAKE LONG!

3. In the Download Forms section you will find a parental permission/release form in both English and Spanish. You should have each child return signed a signed form. Also collect parent’s names and the child’s nickname for use as a password in the website’s “Personal Page for Children”. This is the RED BOX in the “Just Run across the USA” section. If they don’t have a nickname they can use their real name. Be aware that if two children have the same name under one group that you will have to change one to make them unique passwords.

4. You should read the “Training and Running Tips for Leaders” section of the website – particularly the sections on:

- Welcome to the Just Run Program
- Measuring your Running Course
- Advice from Successful Programs
- Recording Mileage for Running Across the USA
- Typical Workout Session

We will always be adding new advice and workouts in this section as well. If you have something that works for your group, please share it with us so we can post it for other groups to use. You may e-mail it to Mike Dove at mnjdove@aol.com or Susan Love at susanwlove@sbcglobal.net

5. Also read as much possible of the other sections to become familiar with the entire program. Give each child and parent the www.justrun.org website so they can use it as a resource and as a reference. Explain the program and the Run Across the USA feature. Each person will be able to track their group's progress as they try to run across the USA; they will be able to see all the interesting geographical, historical, nutritional, and fun sites along the way.

6. Find and measure your course(s) and pick times and days when your group will meet and get started.

7. We are eager to assist you in any way possible. Also be aware that we can provide clinics and leader training sessions for individual programs. Call Mike Dove at 831-484-2309 (e-mail mnjdove@aol.com) or Susan Love at 831-625-6226 (e-mail susanwlove@sbcglobal.net).
